Built in 1938 at Doncaster Railway Works, the steam locomotive No. 4468 'Mallard' is a Class A4 Pacific, 4-6-2, designed by Nigel Gresley for LNER (London North Eastern Railway).
Those in the know acclaim Mallard as being one of the most beautiful steam locomotives ever made. One of thirty-five splendidly streamlined A4 Pacifics, it set a world speed record of 126 mph on 3rd July 1938. Although driver Joe Duddington believed her capable of 130 mph, the outbreak of World War II prevented another attempt. Retired in 1963, Mallard was preserved in 1964, entered the National Railway Museum in 1975 and was restored from 1982 to 1988. As one of only six remaining A4 Pacifics, Mallard is an absolutely highlight for visitors to the museum.
